I’m Ann Kiessling, PhD, and I’m running for re-election to Bedford’s Board of Health.
Government of the people, by the people and for the people only functions well if the people take a turn at offering expertise to serve local government.
My personal expertise includes a PhD in Biophysics/Biochemistry and 27 years on Harvard Medical School faculty as a virologist and reproductive biologist. With over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals plus two books on subjects including HIV, herpes viruses and stem cells, I have decades of experience designing and analyzing biomedical studies and lecturing nationally and internationally.
I have served on advisory boards for California, Connecticut, New York, Harvard University, Greece, India, and the National Institutes of Health.
When COVID19 struck, my Bedford research lab responded to the urgent request by the Food and Drug Administration to develop a clinical test for SARS2. Because lab personnel had the expertise to develop such a test, the BRF lab was one of the first in the state to be able to offer tests for SARS2/COVID19 to hospitals, long term care facilities, camps, and Bedford residents. The testing was offered to all Bedford town employees, including teachers, school staff, firefighters and police for free until April, 2021, when larger labs could do the testing.
My focus areas on the Board of Health have included bus stop shelters, mosquito and tick control, athletic field tick barriers, SARS2/COVID19, school start times, and more recently, ADA compliance. Much remains to be done in these areas.
Reviewing Bedford’s response to the COVID19 pandemic and responding to concerns of Bedford residents will be additional priorities of mine if re-elected.
I ask for your vote on March 11, 2023.
