Council on Aging Message for December 2022

December 1, 2022

~ Submitted by the Bedford Council on Aging

We have reached the last month of the year in 2022. I hope you feel, as I do, much better connected and engaged with us than last year. I extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff and volunteers of the American Legion, Post 221 for helped bring us together again this year for a delicious Thanksgiving meal and for their unwavering compassion for the senior community in Bedford.

The success of the COA’s programs and services is truly thanks to our wonderful volunteers, instructors, leaders, performers and the behind-the-scenes staff and volunteers that make it all happen for Bedford seniors every day, week and month of the year.

With this in mind, I invite you to try one of our wonderful exercise classes in the new year. Since COVID, we have adapted some classes to a virtual format, some are hybrid and many have returned back to in-person.

Virtual classes are a wonderful addition to our programs during bad weather and we have helped many residents get connected online. Chair exercise and chair yoga work especially well if you want to get back to being active, recovering from surgery or have limited mobility. Our classes range from $4 for virtual classes, $6 for in-person general exercise classes and specialty classes, such as Tai Chi are $10/class. Any class can be paid a month ahead or day by day – depending on your schedule. We will send zoom links and reminders for our virtual classes to your email and can help get you connected if you need assistance.

General and specialty exercise classes are led by our gym-quality, trained instructors who understand the older body. Every class welcomes you with permission to use our lighter or heavier weights, stretch bands, exercise balls and steps to increase or decrease the intensity of your workout in your own way. These affordable classes are designed with you in mind, in a group setting and focus on improving strength, balance and coordination. Just bring water and wear sneakers! Please call for more information on our classes or see page 6 of the COA’s newsletter. In the month of January, first timers can try any 1st class for free!

Consider the gift of exercise, movement, and connection for yourself, a friend, family member or neighbor. We look forward to helping you stay fit and active in the new year in whatever way you choose.

Also, at 1 p.m. on Dec. 9th, we are holding the FBCOA/COA 2022 Holiday Party to gather and welcome in the holiday season. I hope you will consider joining us and the FBCOA, who are kindly sponsoring our catering for this special event. Please call ahead by Dec. 6 if you would like to attend. Thank you to the FBCOA for all their support of our exercise programs during COVID and helping us get our day trips off the ground again!

I look forward to celebrating the season together with you and the COA staff again this year.

In closing, I send you warm, holiday cheer from the entire COA staff, BLT driver and myself. We all wish you, your family and loved ones a very happy, healthy and safe holiday season. Take care. Hope to see you soon.

As always, Alison Cservenschi, (She/Hers), Director
