An Obituary: Roy Edward Mallory

December 8, 2022

Roy Edward Mallory, 73, of Bedford, died on Dec. 5, 2022.

He graduated from Tufts University in 1971 with a degree in electrical engineering. Friends remember him as a warm, witty, engaging, and musically talented man who was instrumental in getting the Tufts radio station, WMFO, on the air.

For his entire career, Roy worked at ADE Corporation, most recently for the spin-off company KLA-MicroSense, based in Lowell. In the course of his long career, Roy obtained many patents on behalf of the company. Beyond his official responsibilities, he mentored countless new employees.

A notable project to which Roy contributed was the LIGO experiment, for which three American physicists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017. For the project, Roy devised a particular apparatus that was essential in keeping the noise down to the exact frequency needed by the scientists.

Roy is survived by his loving wife Sylvia Mallory (D’Alessandro) of Bedford, as well as many dear and devoted friends and cousins.

A celebration of Roy’s life is planned for a later date.
