Helen W. Millar, 91, of Bedford, died on Dec. 18, 2022 at the home of her son in South Portland, Maine.
Born Helen Hope Wiley on July 26, 1931, she was the second daughter (two minutes ahead of her identical twin) of Harold and Eva Schurr Wiley. Helen and her sisters grew up on the family farm near Shawsville in Harford County, Maryland.
After graduating Western Maryland College in 1952, Helen was a high school English teacher in greater Baltimore. During the course of several summers, she earned a Master’s degree in Library Science at Syracuse University.
At a house party in the spring of 1961, she met a young engineer, Robert I. Millar, Jr., whom she married that August. In 1966, she moved with, by then, three children to Bedford where Bob had accepted a position at MITRE. Once the kids, including a fourth born at Emerson Hospital, were all in school, Helen became a substitute teacher at Bedford High and Junior High schools for many years.
She was very active in the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Bedford for several decades. Helen was also active in the Bedford chapter of the Emerson Auxiliary for many years, making puppets and teddy bears for the pediatric patients.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Bob. She is survived by all four of her children, who were able to be with her for her last days, and five grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Congregational Church in the New Year.
