More than 150 customers were without electricity for several hours on Wednesday as a result of a one-car accident.

Bedford police reported that a southbound car struck a utility pole on Springs Road near Ellingson Road just before 6 a.m. The resulting outage ended around 12:30 p.m.

Police said the public safety dispatcher received multiple emergency calls. The driver was taken by the Bedford Fire Department ambulance to Lahey Hospital in Burlington, police said, with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident initially affected only six houses, according to a spokesman for Eversource. But when crews arrived to replace the damaged pole and reset the wiring, it was necessary to “de-energize the area,” affecting another 147 customers.

“When something like that happens, it’s all about safety,” he said.

A spokesman for Middlesex Community College said the Springs Road campus was without electricity between 9:20 and 11:03 a.m.
