The Bedford Fire Department will launch the 100th anniversary of National Fire Prevention Week with an open house at the fire station, 55 The Great Road, Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.

Capt. John Daniels, the department’s fire prevention officer, said the theme of this year’s observance is, “Fire won’t wait – plan your escape.”

The annual open house is “a time when we try to educate the public,” Daniels said, and there will be literature about home safety, including planning escape routes and establishing a safe meeting place.

But the focus will also be on children, Daniels stressed, and the lineup features a truck wash, pumpkin decorating, and pizza.

The National Fire Prevention Association began Fire Prevention Week in 1922, commemorating the Great Chicago Fire, which began on Oct. 8, 1871.
