Letter to the Editor: In Support of Timmy Sullivan

~ Subnmitted by Marc Randazzo

I am supporting Timmy Sullivan for State Representative because our district needs someone who will take bold action to fight for policies that will help families, improve education and protect the environment.

Massachusetts has the highest child care costs in the country, and there is a lack of affordable and quality child care. Costs have skyrocketed over the past decade, and care for an infant in Massachusetts, according to a recent study, accounts for 24.4% of household income. The monthly cost is often more than rent or a mortgage payment! Many families are forced to have one parent put their career goals on hold so they can take care of children, because outside care is too expensive. These years out of the labor force harm not only the future earnings of families, but also take away from the state economy, as Massachusetts loses out on spending and income taxes. Timmy Sullivan puts families first and will make universal child care and universal pre-kindergarten his top priorities.

Timmy cares deeply about education and wants to ensure access to higher education for all. He has a plan to fund debt-free public higher education for all Massachusetts residents. States such as West Virginia, Kansas, Oklahoma and Indiana (among others) offer some form of free higher education to their residents. It is well beyond time that Massachusetts be added to this list!

On the environment, it is clear that with periods of drought, extreme weather, and sea-level rise that we are on the precipice of catastrophe. Massachusetts has set some aggressive goals to reduce emissions by 50% from 1990 levels by 2030, however, these goals will not be met without people in the legislature who care deeply and who will drive initiatives forward. Through Timmy’s leadership at UMass, he put the University on a path to be carbon-neutral 20 years ahead of schedule. He will act with similar urgency to address climate policy in Massachusetts, and will work to transition the state to 100% renewable electricity immediately, expand electric-powered, fare-free public transit, and create public residential composting.

Massachusetts was once a model for the country in pushing forward progressive ideals. We have fallen by the wayside in recent years, and it is time we once again lead the country in doing what is right for people and the environment. Timmy is the right person to lead this charge.
