A new feature this year will be a free book coupon for children who visit the Friends’ Bedford Day booth, along with a crayon box and bookmark to color. The coupon will be redeemable at the book sale.
Janice Weichman, Friends’ spokesperson, affirmed there will be thousands of fiction and nonfiction books, DVDs, CDs, and more for adults, teens, and children at the sale. As always, proceeds of the sale help support special programs at the Library and a variety of other Library needs that might not be met through the regular municipal budget.
During the height of the pandemic when the Library building was closed, the Friends came up with creative ideas to meet readers’ needs. They launched an online book store, promoted at no cost via social media; they developed the idea of bundling bags of books and “themed” book sales, which were then hand-delivered by Friends volunteers. Weichman said patrons were delighted to find books, puzzles, and games sitting at their doorstep, a service that was particularly welcomed by housebound parents of young children. This was a community service as well as a much-needed generator of income for the Friends during the time when regular book sales were curtailed.
One positive feature of the pandemic: The Friends accelerated their online and social media presence, which attracted new volunteers to the organization.
