LGBQT+ Cafe a Big Success

June 17, 2022

Co-hosted by the Bedford COA and Bedford Embraces Diversity was the first ever multi-generational LGBQT+ Cafe which took place at the Flint Room, Bedford Town Center, on June 14.

The idea for the Cafe was the brainchild of COA Board member Marilou Barsam and COA Director Alison Cservenschi after they both went through a state-sponsored LGBTQ+ certification process. One of their recommendations was to try a café.

Barsam mentioned how she liked the idea of the cafe and was disappointed in the lack of Pride events in the town. Cservenschi said there was a group of seniors who most likely were still quiet about their lifestyle and an event might help them be more comfortable.   After some discussion, they thought a multi-generational event would be a great way for people to connect and share their personal stories.

It did turn out to be a truly multi-generational event with over 35 people attending,   ranging from high school students to people in their eighties.

Cservenschi opened the event by discussing some of the challenges LGBQT+ seniors have in our society and what she sees in her role as COA Director.

A brief musical presentation was provided by Val Rushanan whose songs with piano accompaniment set a joyful yet reflective mood.  Then a group of storytellers told their personal accounts.  Jill Butler, a BHS English teacher and lead of GSA, shared her story of growing up in South Boston.  Recent BHS graduates Liv Evans and Bronson-Buhler (Class of 2022) and Nasper Caron, 2018, added their personal stories.

Butler then led the group through a game to challenge preconceived notions as to who people are.

Ralph Hammond, long-time Bedford resident, said after listening to the stories of the young students, “I have never been more proud to be a BHS graduate.”
