Letter to the Editor: A Reminder about Bedford’s Gun Buyback Program

~ Submitted by Don Marshall

How many readers know that Bedford has a gun buy-back program? It was set up several years ago when Robert Bongiorno was chief of the Bedford Police Department. We are one of the very few towns that have such a program. At the present it is privately funded—$50.00 for any gun turned in, though most have declined the payment.

There was an initial flurry of buybacks but it has slowed to a trickle. For heaven’s sake, if you have a gun lying around the house: or if you have any question about anger management, or whatever, on the part of someone who might get access to it, please, please call the Police Department and they will send an officer to your home to pick it up – no questions asked. Don’t transport it yourself unless you are appropriately licensed.

And remind everyone you know.

It is only a small step but taking even one gun out of circulation that might have been used out of anger is enough to make it all worthwhile.
