As we honor the brave souls who gave their lives for our country this Memorial Day, I thought it would be helpful to explain the various memorials throughout our town.  Where they are and whom they honor.  We wrote a story about this last year,  As Bedford Prepares for Memorial Day, Visit the Town’s War Memorials, The Bedford Citizen – May 21, 2021.  In this podcast we’re going to be talking with the people who can tell you the stories behind the memorials:

Sharon MacDonald will explain the history of the Old Burying Ground on Springs Road

Then we will move down the Great Road and visit Shawsheen Cemetery.  Don Corey will give us a brief history of the cemetery and talk about Bedford during the Civil War.  And then we will head to the Common and discuss the World War I memorial boulder.  We have a clip from a speech that Lee Yates gave, putting the magnitude of WW1 into perspective.

Next we will move to Veterans Park across the street from the Whole Foods plaza and hear from Joe Piantedosi.

Fallen Heroes Memorial

Then we will head to Mudge way and hear from OC O’Connor to talk about the memorials in front of the High School as well as the John A. Hart-Travis D. Desiato Bridge crossing the Concord River on Route 225.

We end the tour at Springs Brook Park, location of the  9/11 Memorial Garden which honors those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
