President Eisenhower instituted a proposal to create what we now call our Interstate Highway System. Although it doesn’t look exactly like his administration had proposed, the basic idea of connecting the country through contiguous highways while using a consistent and logical numbering system for the long routes, and another for those that branched off the interstates.
The numbering system is perfect in it’s simplicity and by the time I teach you how the exit numbers tie into this, you may never need a GPS again!
