Letter to the Editor: Regarding Emily Mitchell, Candidate for Select Board

~ Submitted by Heather Leavell and Anne Caron

We write this letter wholeheartedly supporting Emily Mitchell for reelection to the Bedford Select Board. We have known Emily for many years and have always been impressed by her ability to understand the issues facing our town and enact changes that make our government work better for all.

During a recent candidate meet and greet, Emily expressed the simple guiding principal behind her work on the Select Board: “I work for the community to make it easier to live in community.” For Emily, living in community requires doing the hard work necessary to create and nurture an environment that values empathy and mutual respect for all.

Throughout her tenure, Emily has been a leading proponent of Select Board initiatives that promote the values of inclusion, equity, and justice. She was an ally and advocate in our work to pass Indigenous Peoples Day in Bedford, voting in favor of the article’s inclusion on the warrant and again in favor of a Select Board recommendation to approve it. She supported Bedford’s participation in the Racial Equity and Municipal Action Plan (REMAP) grant program, and she will work to implement those recommendations in her next term. She supported an increase in the default percentage of green energy to 20% via Community Choice Aggregation and will continue to support the work of the Energy and Sustainability Committee on Bedford’s Net Zero plan and the hiring of a Sustainability Manager. Additionally, Emily helped to implement a town-wide accessibility audit and establish a Commission on Disabilities to ensure that residents with disabilities can participate fully and equally in all aspects of life in Bedford.

Thanks to Emily, the work of Town Government is more transparent and accessible than ever before. She helped to improve Town Meeting voting procedures and expand public access to Select Board meetings via livestreaming and public comment periods. She has a track record of holding our boards, committees, and Town employees accountable to work equitably for everyone. Emily is also passionate about the arts and culture. She helped to establish Bedford’s Cultural District and supports expanding Town-wide cultural events, including Pride Month celebrations.

Emily works tirelessly with both Town officials and residents in a culture of mutual respect and trust. Bedford is a more accessible, livable, and inclusive town because of her work these last three difficult years. Please vote for Emily Mitchell on March 12th!
