Letter to The Editor: Regarding Kelly Horton, Candidate for School Committee

~ Submitted by Rebecca Li, PhD

On March 12th I will be voting for Kelly Horton and I invite others to join me.  I have known Kelly for a number of years since she and I have boys the same age in the Bedford school system.

As the mother of 3 young boys across multiple schools in Bedford, this work is personal to Kelly – she understands the challenges of meaningful inclusion for all children and support in our schools. I was particularly impressed with her thoughtful leadership when she initiated a parent-led group “Bring Bedford Back Safely” in the midst of the pandemic. She invested countless hours of community service in understanding the issues, hearing from members of the community, and bringing us to a consensus around key meaningful issues. She thoughtfully
advocated for a metrics-based approach to bring children back to school in-person. As challenging as the COVID-19 was on our community, when we look back on how things unfolded last year, those of us with children in the school system will likely agree that bringing the children back in the Spring was crucial in mitigating longer term emotional impacts.

As we move forward, I believe she will leverage lessons from the pandemic years of 20-21 as well as her professional success as a leader at Biogen to advocate for our community. The years ahead of us are critical ones for our schools as we manage our way through what is hopefully an inflection point in this pandemic.

Kelly Horton is a parent, a professional and an advocate for our community and what we need as our next School Committee member.  The next 2 years are critical ones for our schools as we manage our way through an inflection point in the pandemic.  I know she is ready to do the hard work ahead of us in effecting change by putting our children’s wellbeing and mental health first; putting in place a feedback process from key stakeholders (parents, teachers, students) prior to implementation of major initiatives, and lastly fostering an environment of inclusion for all.

Please join me in voting for Kelly Horton (HortonForBedford.com) for School Committee on March 12th.
