Superintendent Conrad Shares Governor Baker’s May 17 Update

As many of you are aware, today at his press conference Governor Baker made a number of COVID-19 related announcements.   Governor Baker’s 5/17/2021 Press Release

The following points will outline what the Governor’s announcement states:

  • The Governor expects to end the current state of emergency on June 15, 2021
  • As of May 18, 2021, the Governor is revising the face-covering requirements for youth sports and the guidance as it relates to K-12 schools:

Youth Sports

  • Effective May 18th youth and amateur sports guidance will be updated to no longer require face coverings for youth athletes 18 and under while playing outdoor sports.
  • Effective May 29, all youth and amateur sports restrictions will be lifted.

  • Effective May 18th, guidance from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Department of Early Education and Care will be updated to no longer require masks for outdoor activities like recess and to allow for the sharing of objects in classrooms, in both K-12 and childcare settings. This guidance will remain in effect beyond May 29. Attached is a Link to DESE guidance and a Link to EEC guidance
  • Face coverings are required indoors for staff and students of K-12 schools and early education providers.

The Governor will be updating the Commonwealth’s Face Covering Guidance effective May 29, 2021. However until new guidelines are announced, face coverings are required indoors for staff and students of K-12 schools and early education providers.

We expect to get more information from DESE later this week, as we receive information that will be shared with our school community.

As outlined by the Governor, no changes have been made to a number of other distancing measures including DESE’s guidance for graduations. Please know that we will continue to work closely with DESE, The Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the Bedford Department of Health and Human Services and keep you apprised of changes as they occur.
