Help Your Garden Grow & Conserve Water with a DPW Rain Barrel

The spring planting season is almost here. If you are looking for a sustainable, cost-effective way to water your garden, the Department of Public Works has a suggestion: capture the rainwater off your roof and use it on the days it doesn’t rain.

What does a rain barrel look like?

The DPW’s Stormwater Management Team has arranged for residents to purchase a rain barrel from The Great American Rain Barrel Company and receive it by mid-April.

To purchase a rain barrel at the discounted price of $69.00 each, residents should visit the Community Program page of The Great American Rain Barrel Company (https://www.greatamericanrainbarrel.com/community/) and select “Bedford” from the dropdown menu to place their order. Multiple barrels can be purchased.

Residents will be able to pick up their rain barrels at the Compost Center at 108 Carlisle Road on Saturday, April 17, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Rain barrels must be purchased through the company’s website by April 8, 2021, to ensure delivery.

“Rain barrels have many environmental and cost-saving benefits,” said Kristin Dowdy, the DPW’s Environmental Engineer. ”The barrels help reduce pollution from runoff and provide a free alternative source of water for plants and gardens.”

Residents can email the DPW at [email protected] with any questions about the program or visit the website at www.bedfordma.gov/dpw/stormwater.
