Hanscom Airfield Taxiway Repaving Planned for Summer/Fall 2021

January 30, 2021

The Massachusetts Port Authority is planning a taxiway repaving project on the north airfield near Hartwell Road in Bedford for late summer or early fall.

However, Anthony Gallagher, Massport community relations representative, assured the Hanscom Field Advisory Commission during a January 19 meeting that the scope of the project is nowhere near the summer 2017 runway resurfacing that disrupted some Bedford neighborhoods. He said it will involve “a few hundred feet of taxiway pavement of roughly 50 feet width.”

That contrasts with the repaved Runway 11/29, which is about 7,000 feet long and 150 feet wide.

Gallagher says work on the taxiway project will also be restricted to business hours, in contrast to the 2017 repaving. The earlier project involved thousands of truckloads of gravel, asphalt, runway millings, and heavy equipment being hauled through neighborhood streets 24/7 for six weeks.

“I look forward to working collaboratively with everybody on this as we find a way to do this as delicately as possible,” Gallagher said.

The airfield has several taxiways according to SkyVector.com.  The repaving of this one, known as November Taxiway, is related to the new Ross Rectrix-financed, Massport-owned T-hangar complex being planned for land directly across the street from The Edge Sports Center in Bedford.

Massport anticipates bidding for the taxiway project will take place this spring.  To see the full Massport projects and development report for January, Hanscom Airfield Projects & Third-Party Development Report—January, 2021
