The Department of Public Works is opening the Compost Center for two weeks starting this Saturday to give Bedford residents an outlet for the tree debris generated from last Monday’s storm. Residents will also be able to drop off yard waste on the compost pile.

The Compost Center, at 108 Carlisle Road, will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday through May 2.

The Compost Center is open to Bedford residents only. Commercial vehicles and businesses are prohibited from using the site. To promote social distancing, the DPW is staggering the schedule using an odd/even household number system to control the number of vehicles that enter the site.

  • Odd-Numbered Addresses ~ On Saturday, April 18, residents from odd-numbered households can drop off their brush and yard waste.
  • Even-Numbered Addresses ~On Monday, April 20, residents from even-numbered households can drop off their brush and yard waste.

The schedule will continue in this rotation through May. 2. The complete schedule is on Compost Center opening for Bedford residents.

“We need to control the access to the Compost Center to maintain social distancing,” said David Manugian, DPW Director. “We’re asking for everyone’s cooperation to come on their assigned days and to follow the traffic pattern we’ve set up to avoid having cars backed up onto Carlisle Road.”

Manugian added there will be signs at the site directing cars.

“We want to avoid having vehicles backed up on Carlisle Road,” Manugian said. “Please follow the signs, drive slow and be patient if there is a line.

“Most importantly, please maintain social distance.”

  • Leave your vehicle only to drop off leaf bags or brush piles.
  • Do not stay on the premises to talk to / interact with other residents.
  • Follow instructions from DPW personnel on site

Brush and Limbs
Residents entering the site should drive to the left side of the paved area to the left of the compost piles. After turning right at the top of the hill, residents with brush should to past the compost piles and turn right down the hill. The DPW is limiting the number of vehicles at the brush pile to three cars or trucks at a time.

Yard Waste
Residents with yard waste will follow the same route but turning right before the new compost pile. Residents will drop-off yard waste to the left of their vehicle.

“When finished we need residents to enter their cars and depart the site,” said Manugian. “Again, I want to emphasize we don’t want people congregating at the brush pile or the compost pile.”

Acceptable yard waste consists of leaves, grass clippings, garden clippings, pine needles and branches less than one inch in diameter. Tall paper bags, available at a variety of local stores, are acceptable but residents using plastic bags but the bags must empty them and take home for disposal or reuse. Tree branches larger than one inch in diameter can be put in the brush pile.

Protecting Bedford’s Wetlands and Storm Sewers
To keep Bedford’s rivers and streams clean, residents are asked not to dump any yard waste in wetlands and to keep leaves away from catch basins near their homes to avoid clogging the Town’s drainage system.
