The March 9 Selectmen’s meeting was the last one for Chair Michael Rosenberg who had served on the board since 2008. Rosenberg’s term will end with the Town election this coming Saturday, March 14.

Rosenberg used the opportunity to review his time on the committee and in local government. He thanked his current and former colleagues, many of whom he credited with helping him succeed when he first joined the board.

Rosenberg also highlighted the importance of citizen engagement at the local level, rather than the federal level, since the majority of impacting decisions come from an individual’s local government.

Selectman Margot Fleischman thanked Mike Rosenberg for his service to the town and all he has done to help his fellow Selectmen. Fleischman’s colleagues echoed similar praise for the retiring Chair. More can be read on his service to the town here.

In Other Business

In other business, the Selectmen approved committee appointments, approved a request to delay water and sewer permit fees for a construction project on Plank Street, and heard updates on the COVID-19 outbreak.

Committee Appointments

The Bedford Republican Town Committee nominated William Speciale to the Registrar of Voters. Speciale was confirmed to fill the vacancy.

William Deen and Robert Kalantari both spoke on their qualifications to serve out the remainder of a vacancy on the Community Preservation Commission.

Deen spoke of his applicable experience, part of which comes from residing in Bedford for the past 40 years. Deen also explained how his role as a professor helps him analyze and review research proposals, which could help translate into reviewing proposals on the Community Preservation Commission.

Kalntari echoed a similar message and cited his experience in the private sector and service on the Zoning Board of Appeals for the past five years. Kalantari also explained how he hopes that the committee and whole town government improve communication to greater engage the community.

However, several of the Selectmen felt that it was a bad idea to confirm either candidate to the Commission since neither had attended a meeting previously, as is generally required. A decision on fulfilling the vacancy will be made at a future meeting.

Robert Dorer spoke on his interest in serving on the Energy and Sustainability committee. Dorer was confirmed to the committee unanimously.

Mike Rosenberg was confirmed to the 300th Anniversary Committee.

Water and Sewer Permit Fees

DPW Engineer Adrienne St. John answered questions about the delayed water and sewer permit fees at 100 Plank Street. A representative from Greylock partners, the firm constructing the housing, was also available for questioning.

The Selectmen approved the request to delay the payment of water and sewer permit fees unanimously.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update
