Regional Award Update

Katie Duval and Katherine with the station’s Noreaster award

The Bedford TV Staff had an exciting Halloween night as they attended the Alliance for Community Media – Northeast Conference and the Nor’easter Awards Ceremony.  The presentation of the awards took place at SPACE, a contemporary arts venue in Portland, ME. Community Media professionals from all over New England and New York were present to represent their media centers and accept their awards. By the end of the night, Bedford TV came away with 3 big award wins.

The first award was for 3rd place in the “Event Coverage – Multiple Cameras” category. Bedford TV was recognized for its coverage of the 2019 Bedford High School Graduation Ceremony. This was the first big event that Bedford TV had recorded and streamed live with the use of their newly acquired SlingStudio system (many thanks go to the Bedford Cultural Council for helping to make that possible!). This was also the first year that they had used more than one camera to present the event to viewers, and family and friends of the graduates from all around the world were able to watch it live.

The next award was for 1st place in the “About Access and Community Media” Category. Bedford TV producer, Wayne Braverman, recently had Executive Director Katie Duval, on his program, Celebrate Life, to learn about her background, and discuss her hopes for the future of Bedford TV. Within the program, Duval spoke about why Community Media is so important and explained to viewers how easy it is to present their ideas and passions to the world through community television.

The last award the BTV team brought home was actually for one of their younger videographers, Healy Weisman. Healy, a student at JGMS, remembered how stressful and scary it was when she made the move from elementary school to middle school, so she created the video, JGMS 5th to 6th Grade Transition, to help ease the minds of incoming 6th graders. Through the video, Healy along with her classmates, her teachers, and the administration show the students how to navigate the challenges that a new school can present. They explain how to manage things like having more homework, having many teachers instead of one, and having a personal locker. Healy won 1st place in the “Children and Youth” category and was presented with her award during Bedford TV’s Annual Meeting and Awards Night on Friday, November 8th.

These awards would not be possible absent the talented volunteers, our board of directors, and staff who dedicate their time to producing great programming at Bedford TV. If you are interested in volunteering at Bedford TV either to produce your own show or to help cover events around town please email [email protected] to learn more about opportunities at the station.

They put their heart and soul into what they do at the station, and we want all of our volunteers to know how much we appreciate what they do for us. We were especially lucky to have so many of our young students and interns with us as well. They helped with the setup and took the steering role with the night’s production. A special big thank you to my staff and board as well. Without them, this night would not have been possible.”

Guests were treated to pizza generously donated by Flatbread, plus a variety of other snacks and treats.  Thank you to everyone who attended the event, and our event sponsors, Red Heat Tavern and Flatbread Pizza. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners!  Be sure to check out our YouTube channel to see the entire event and all the winners!
