The Bedford Council on Aging (COA) will offer Savvy Caregiver, a free, evidence-based program for caregivers, starting Tuesday, November 5. The program, which was developed in 2008 by five researchers from the University of Minnesota, is designed to help families and others unfamiliar with the role they face as caregivers for those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.
The curriculum focuses on helping caregivers think about their situation objectively, and provides them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to manage stress and carry out the caregiving role effectively.
The 12-hour training program is presented in two-hour sessions over a six-week period. Classes will take place from 1 to 3 pm starting Tuesday, November 5.h It will run each Tuesday through Dec 10 at the COA. Classes are free to caregivers but you must register.
Savvy Caregiver has been shown to increase caregiver skill, knowledge, and confidence, as well as reducing caregiver distress.
