Environmental Cleanup at Hanscom Air Force Base ~ RAB Update, Thursday, October 24

The 2019 Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) meeting for Hanscom Air Force Base (Hanscom AFB) will be held on Thursday, October 24, beginning at 7:00 PM.  The meeting will be held in the Bedford Town Center Building (Yellow Building behind Town Hall), Flint Room, 12 Mudge Way, Bedford, MA.  The meeting is open to the public.

Investigation and remediation of contaminated sites at Hanscom Field/Hanscom AFB began in the early 1980s.  The Hanscom Field/Hanscom AFB Site was added to the National Priorities List in 1994.  To date, cleanup activities have been completed at 15 sites and 1 Area of Concern.  Clean up activities are ongoing at eight sites, including both soil and groundwater investigations and remediation.

The meeting agenda includes a review of current and planned cleanup activities and an update on the emerging contaminants perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and 1,4-dioxane.  PFOS/PFOA are contained in Aqueous Film Forming Foam that was used by the Hanscom AFB Fire Department in aircraft crash response and training for fighting petroleum fires.  1,4-dioxane was a stabilizer in certain chlorinated solvents and degreasers.  PFOS/PFOA and 1,4-dioxane are “emerging contaminants” and have only recently been identified to be of potential public concern in drinking water.  The meeting will conclude with public questions and comments.

The RAB consists of military, town, state and federal officials, as well as citizen volunteers who meet to offer their insight to the cleanup program.  For additional information on the meeting, please contact William Gooden, Remedial Program Manager (RPM) at 781-225-6148.
