One Giant Leap ~ Celebrating Apollo 11: Frank Gauntt

July 19, 2019

By Meredith McCulloch

Frank Gauntt earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT and went to work at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, now Draper Lab.

He said it was a great honor to work with Eldon Hall who led the design group for the guidance system including the early use of integrated circuits.

An Apollo 6 kiloword Fixed Memory Module, with two modern USB thumb drives for comparison. The Apollo memory module can hold 12,000 bytes of data. The two thumb drives together can hold 40 gigabytes, or 40,000,000,000 bytes of data. Courtesy image (c) David Gauntt, 2019 all rights reserved

Frank’s son David recalls when his father brought the Apollo guidance system to Page School so he could present it for “Show and Tell.”

When asked what he thinks about the 50-year anniversary, Frank Gauntt said, “ I am looking forward to the first flight out of the solar system.”

Editor’s Note: Meredith McCulloch has sought out individuals with Bedford connections who were part of NASA’s Apollo program – Click this link to learn more about her project – each of the interviews will appear separately, under the individual’s name, and will be collected in a single reference document once all are posted.

Correction on August 2, 2019: In the original story, Mr. Gauntt was incorrectly identified as ‘Fred Gauntt’ but his correct name is Frank Gauntt.
