Freedom of the Press: Join The Citizen for a Deeper Look at the First Amendment ~ May 13 at 7 pm

By Meredith McCulloch

Historian Ron Chernow, author of Hamilton, spoke at the 2019 White House Correspondents’ dinner on April 28. He said, “We gather here in perfect security due to words on a small piece of parchment called the Bill of Rights written by James Madison. That paper barrier stands between the free press and executive tyranny.”

Those of us at The Bedford Citizen are grateful for this protection. We are a very small press, but that would not protect us from retaliation in a more autocratic country.  This is not a universal freedom.
