Work on the new athletic fields at Liljegren Way has begun.  After approval of the erosion control barrier, the area between the practice football field and the St. Michael’s parking lot is being cleared of trees and brush for the new multi-purpose field.  MJ Cataldo of Littleton was awarded the contract to realign the varsity baseball field and construct a 385’ x 220’ grass field to accommodate soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and practice football.  Some of the amenities included in the project are new bleachers for baseball spectators, a mounded area for soccer spectators, new score boards and protective netting along the end zones.

The fields were designed by Symmes Maini & McKee Associates and include a multi-pipe underdrain system to facilitate proper drainage.  The entire area will be sodded and ready for play in late spring 2018.  No site lighting is included, as the fields will only be used during daylight hours.

The project also has a wetland replication component, as required by the Order of Conditions issued by the Bedford Conservation Commission.  That project is the construction of a wet pond resource area behind Page Field.  The invasive phragmites have been excavated and the new 1.3-acre pond is currently being shaped.  The bermed area around the pond will be planted with native wetland plants to encourage pollinators and other invertebrates.  Work on the pond should be complete by early August.
