Joseph P. Serra, a 56-year resident of Bedford and a valued member of Bedford Community Access Television for the past five years, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2016. Joe served both as Clerk of the Board of Directors and as an irrepressible tech support guru who could create inventive, and successful, MacGyver-like repairs for nearly any piece of Bedford TV’s equipment.

“Joe was an invaluable member of the Bedford TV community,” said Greg Dolan, Bedford TV’s Executive Director. “He used his knowledge as an engineer to repair equipment that we thought to be past the point of being salvaged.  He fixed microphones, cameras, speakers, amplifiers, really any kind of equipment we would have trouble with.  He would take it home, work his magic, and then come back in with a breakdown of what went wrong, how it happened, and what we could do in the future help prevent it from happening again.  He taught us not only about technical details and processes but also the value of a methodical approach to fixing complicated problems.  Through this process he would break down complex technical problems into their component pieces and come up with a workable solution.

“And while we will miss Joe greatly for his technical expertise, more than anything we will miss his presence in the studio,” Dolan continued. ” Joe always walked into the room with a smile and a joke.  His humor and positivity was cherished by both our staff and volunteers and we could always count on him to have the whole room smiling along with him before he left.”

The caring husband of Loretta (Scolly) Serra, Joe was the devoted father of Dianne McGaunn and her husband Scott of Topsfield, Roberta Mahunik and her husband Joey of Fergus Falls, MN and Michael Serra and his wife Sandra of Leominster; and the loving grandfather of Mahayla Serra and Joseph and Matthew McGaunn.

Calling hours will take place at Bedford Funeral Home from 1 to 5 pm on Sunday, June 5. Friends and family wishing to leave a Guest Book message or read Joe’s obituary are invited to click this link. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Brain Injury Association of America, PO Box 7416 Merrifield, VA 22116-7416.

A funeral mass in celebration of Joe’s life is scheduled for 9 am on Monday, June 6 at the Parish of St. Michael, 90 Concord Road in Bedford, with interment at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
