The Majors softball division of Bedford Babe Ruth Baseball and Softball wrapped up its 2015 spring season Friday night, with a championship match-up between the Athletics and Red Sox. Both teams played tough but in the end, the A’s prevailed. Following the traditional post-game handshake and trophy presentation, both teams enjoyed pizza and laughter as the sun set on a cool, dry evening at E-field.

Friday’s game was the culmination of months of effort for these fourth and fifth graders, which for many began at weekly indoor practices in in early January. During the regular season, which opened in April, each team played two to three games a week and practiced most Sunday afternoons. The Red Sox and Athletics, as well as the Cardinals, competed with each other throughout the season, and with teams from both the Lexington and Concord-Carlisle softball leagues.

Coaches and parents remarked on the girls’ improved performance, competitiveness, and sportsmanship over the season. Shaun Bassett, father of Layla Bassett of the Red Sox, said, “These girls have all gotten so much better over the year. They are really playing well now.”

With summer drawing near, many players on all three Bedford Majors teams will continue to play in the summer travel program at either the U12 or U10 level. The U12 team will host Revere on Monday, June 22nd, followed by a U10 match-up with Burlington on Wednesday, June 24th. Girls from both teams will compete in the Eastern Massachusetts State Softball Tournament on June 26-28, in Lawrence.
