Things Our Kids Do: Last Week’s Highlights

Things-our-kids-doHollywood Comes To Bedford

The hottest ticket in town last week was for Friday night’s Bedford Recreation Department’s Dance Recital at JGMS. And I do not exaggerate. Every family gets four tickets, and the process of acquiring more is a frenetic  combination of a lottery, negotiation, and luck. Through my wife’s diligence, we somehow ended up with eight seats, which meant that all of us could go and watch our 5-year old, and we could even bring along some grandparents. Despite the stressful monitoring and shushing of our two little girls in their seats, being able to watch the routines of my little kindergarten princess was joyful. And before my Facebook feed was commandeered by Mother’s Day from Saturday night through the end of the weekend, I did get a solid 24 hours of ballet pictures coming across my screen.

Interleague Play

After a lengthy winter and a delayed opening of the season, Bedford Babe Ruth Baseball and Softball began play on April 26 and is now in its third week of action. Last week, in an exciting new twist, Bedford’s four American League (AL) baseball teams, comprised of mostly 6th and 7th graders, plus some 5th graders, played their first of three nights of interleague games against four of Concord-Carlisle’s (C-C’s) parallel teams. New for this year, these interleague games offer the teams new competition and a chance to see kids from other towns in a setting that’s a little less intense than summer baseball. Last Monday, on a beautiful spring evening, Bedford’s boys swept all four games, with the A’s beating the C-C Giants, 10-2, at Page Field; the Orioles beating the C-C Nationals at Ripley Field in Concord, 11-2; the Red Sox beating the C-C Rays 10-8 at Banta-Davis in Carlisle; and the Angels winning 7-2 over the C-C Orioles at I Field. The next round of interleague games will take place next Monday, May 18, after this Friday night’s AL doubleheader at Page Field, and will include a 7:45 pm game between the A’s and Orioles under the lights.

Soccer

Spring travel soccer through Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS) is in full swing, and Bedford is fielding 20 U9-U18/19 teams this season. So far, so good for the boys and girls in blue, with two teams in particular dominating the early season competition. The girls’ U14 Bucs, coached by Eric Pearson and Stephen Dulgarian, have roared out to a 4-0-1 start, scoring 20 goals and only giving up 3 in games played so far, and the boys U9 Bucs, led by Andy Hurley and Bill Herzog, are a perfect 4-0-0, with a 22-4 goals-scored-to-goals-allowed ratio. Games continue this Saturday and will run through June 13.
