Middlesex Community College: Bedford Campus Programs in February

Health & Wellness Expo

Middlesex Community College will host a Health & Wellness Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the Bedford Campus Center, 591 Springs Road (snow date Feb. 19). Free and open to the public, MCC’s Health & Wellness Expo features a variety of health-care providers and community organizations providing screenings, services and information.

Presented by MCC’s Center for Health & Wellness, the Bedford Health & Wellness Expo will include information about topics such as nutrition and healthy eating, acupuncture and tobacco treatment. The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center will be on hand to answer questions, and the Safety 911 EMS Educators will be providing CPR demonstrations. Visitors can also get free screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, oral-cancer and melanoma.

“This year we are offering various health and wellness short sessions throughout the duration of the Expo,” said Stephanie Hamelin, MCC Health and Wellness educator and Expo organizer.  Sessions include an overview of credit-card management, relaxation and mediation, sound therapy, yoga for beginners, a short fitness class, and a scavenger hunt.

“We have worked hard to cover more aspects of health and wellness, and create a more interactive event for attendees,” added Hamelin.

It’s not too early to start planning your summer! Middlesex Community College will begin enrollment for College for Kids 2014 beginning Monday, Feb. 17. College for Kids 2014 (formerly MCC Summer Camps) offers one-, two- and three-week summer programs for children ages 8 to 15 that run July 14 through Aug. 21 on the Bedford and Lowell campuses.

“College for Kids offers fun and engaging summer programs to provide children with unique opportunities to explore careers, learn new skills, and boost self-confidence,” said Marci Barnes, MCC Program Manager of Community Education and Training. All programs are taught by public-school teachers or by professionals who are experts in their field, Barnes added.

Most College for Kids programs run Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This year, programs explore such topics as film production, aviation, public speaking, science, veterinary medicine, technology, culinary arts, fashion design, digital photography, graphic design, LegoMindstorms, fitness, and more.

Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, Co-Founder of Gilt Groupe to appear in Bedford

Middlesex Community College’s One World Series will host Alexandra Wilkis Wilson, co-founder of Gilt Groupe, an innovative e-commerce company offering luxury lifestyle products and experiences. This special program will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, March 7, in the Bedford Campus Cafeteria, 591 Springs Road. Admission is free and open to the public.

Wilkis Wilson has more than 15 years of international experience in luxury goods, retail and finance. As co-founder of Gilt Groupe, Wilkis Wilson is an integral part of shaping the merchandising, branding, marketing and social media for the Gilt Groupe. She is also author of the recent New York Times-bestseller, “By Invitation Only: How We Built Gilt and Changed the Way Millions Shop.”

Wilkis Wilson also serves as a member of the board of directors of three not-for-profit organizations including Dress for Success Worldwide, an organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support, and career development tools to help women succeed in the workforce.

The One World Series at Middlesex is an annual speaker series addressing topics of current interest, sponsored by MCC’s Center for Leadership & Engagement.
