garlic-and-sapphiresPlenty! With the observance in April of One Book, One Bedford, the Library will be serving up a varied menu of activities to complement the discussion of Ruth Reichl’s Garlic and Sapphires, this year’s book selection.

At the Trustees’ meeting on March 12, Director Richard Callaghan and Assistant Director Noreen O’Gara outlined a list of events designed to appeal to a variety of tastes. On April 2, the Cookbook Book Club will discuss the Reichl book at their regular 7 pm meeting.

Discussions of the book are taking place on four additional dates in the Library meeting room:

  • Sunday, April 7, from 2 to 4 pm: Screening of documentary film maker Leslie Wittman’s film What’s Cooking, Bedford? Celebrating Cultural Diversity One Meal at a Time. This video showcases Bedford residents from various cultural backgrounds, focusing on the foods they prepare as a family. Light refreshments will be served.
  • Tuesday, April 23, from 7 to 9 pm: Bedford resident Catrine Kelty, food stylist, will showcase the art of making food look appetizing. Kelty’s work appears in The Boston Globe Magazine, Yankee Magazine and Cook’s Country, as well as in many cookbooks.
  • Saturday, April 27–Avery Kaplan, Bedford’s acclaimed young chef of MUNCH, featured on Bedford Community Access Television, will be on hand throughout the day to demonstrate her skills.

Even the April Thursday night movies will showcase food themes. Classics such as Babette’s Feast and Eat, Drink, Man, Woman are on the month’s movie menu.

Although not a culinary event, the “Peeps” marshmallow contest had again brought out the creative talents of townspeople and town departments. The Trustees commented on the creative and varied constructions now on exhibit in the Reference area. There seems to be no limit to the imaginative ways to use the marshmallow treats. Voting for the favorite entry will continue until March 19, with the Peep-le’s Choice to be awarded on March 20 at 2 pm.

In his regular report, Director Callaghan said the snowy weather did not deter patrons from taking part in the Chinese New Year celebration, the Legos Challenge, and the Ready, Set, Dance! program. Professor Dan Breen’s lecture series on the Supreme Court also triumphed over bad weather, drawing capacity crowds. BCAT has filmed the lectures and they will be available soon on local cable. The Thursday night movies are setting records: 63 patrons came in to view the Oscar winning film Argo, with some being turned away for lack of space. O’Gara noted that Bedford is able to get copies of the newest films on DVD immediately upon release such as the Academy Award winning Life of Pi, coming up on March 28.

Callaghan reported with relief that the Library is now at full staff, with the recent hiring of O’Gara as Assistant Director and Carol Bender as Children’s Librarian.
In other business, the Trustees voted to lend the Bowie knife, which was a gift to the Library from long-time resident and Selectman the late Charles Hume, to the Historic Arkansas Museum, Little Rock, which plans a major exhibit in the summer of 2013. This action is contingent on approval by Town Counsel.

Callaghan noted that the Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale will take place earlier than usual this year, from March 22 through 24.
