Just after noon, yesterday, January 2, Governor Deval Patrick led Ken Gordon and all other duly elected members of the 188th General Court through the oaths and affirmations of qualification for office as State Representatives.

Last September, Gordon won the Democratic primary for the 21st Middlesex district against Burlington’s Dave Fionda and then prevailed in November’s general election against Burlington Selectman Walter Zenkin, a Republican. The district encompasses Bedford, Burlington, and part of Wilmington.

Gordon is the first Bedford resident to serve in the Massachusetts legislature since former State Senator Carol Amick stepped down in 1989. Before Amick, Chandler Stevens—in the early 60’s—was the most recent resident to serve as State Rep.

Gordon is a lawyer specializing in employee discrimination or harassment based on race, religion, national origin or gender.  Locally, he has served Bedford as chair of the Cultural Council and as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals. Gordon ran on a platform of preserving open spaces, giving the middle class a voice, andprotecting jobs while balancing business with quality of life issues and workers’ rights.

Following the swearing-in ceremonies, Gordon said, “I am thrilled, honored and equally humbled by the opportunity to begin my term serving the people of Bedford, Burlington and Wilmington.  The Speaker and others at the swearing-in laid it on the line: there are tough challenges ahead. But we are up to the task and I am thrilled to have the opportunity and pitch in and work for lasting solutions.”
